The Abstract Monolith: Modular Study No. 1 | Sculpture

Year: 2026

The Abstract Monolith: Modular Study No. 1 marks an important conceptual evolution in Carlos Castillo’s Primitive Pop portfolio. Moving away from the explicit iconography of retro technology, this hand-sculpted abstract piece acts as a deep dive into the formal boundaries of architectural cubism, geometric intersection, and raw material contrast.

The sculpture presents a deconstructed human profile engineered out of intermeshing geometric volumes. Castillo masterfully commands a complex sensory palette here: the smooth, vibrant, satin-lacquered blocks of cadmium red, chartreuse, olive green, and earthy terracotta cut with clinical precision through the composition. These smooth, engineered surfaces stand in deliberate defiance against the heavy, eroded, and intensely pockmarked base pedestal, sculpted to mimic ancient, textured basalt or brutalist poured concrete.

Hand-sculpted from advanced mineral clay composites over a rigid internal steel armature, the structural weight of the piece is palpable. The deep micro-fissures, craters, and structural fault lines visible across the "stone" elements are manually carved, creating a canvas of natural shadows. The final application of a multi-layered polymer resin clear coat seals the pigment, amplifying the tactile depth of the surface without flattening its intricate, gritty details.

The reverse side of the dark, weathered pedestal features the definitive studio mark: Mr. Castle by Carlos Castillo, validating its position in the artist's permanent private archive. Modular Study No. 1 stands as a powerful testament to the beauty found in structural fragmentation, showing how ancient, primitive grit can beautifully coexist with clean, modern minimalism.
