Portfolio Case Study: The Structural Cut
Concept and Commission
This work, "The Structural Cut," was designed as a bespoke conceptual piece for a luxury, high-end hair salon in the affluent Hale area of Manchester. The sculpture's mission was to create an artistic focal point that speaks directly to the client's craft and the sophistication of their clientele.
The piece is a profound exercise in Brutalist Conceptualism, taking the ultimate tool of transformation—the simple hair shear—and rendering it as a powerful, ancient monument.
Conceptual Deconstruction
The sculpture’s aesthetic is built on powerful contrasts:
- Logic vs. Luxury: The raw, heavy, porous texture of the piece contrasts sharply with the sleek, polished finish of the salon environment. This juxtaposition is deliberate, celebrating the raw structural effort and fundamental physics that underpin the finished, elegant product (the perfect cut).
- Primitive Tool: The shears are not rendered as delicate steel but as rough, segmented concrete blocks emerging from a monolithic base. This aligns with the "Primitive" aspect of my work, suggesting that true mastery is built upon primal, enduring foundational skill.
- The Base: The shear blades are anchored firmly into a massive, heavily textured block that is visibly cracked. This block is split down the center, symbolising the precision and power of the dividing cut.
