Neural Link No. 1 (popularly known as The Power Glove Relic) is a cornerstone piece in Carlos Castillo’s ongoing Digital Archaeology series. This one-of-a-kind contemporary sculpture meticulously reimagines Nintendo’s infamous 1989 motion-controller accessory not as a mass-produced plastic consumer item, but as a petrified, tectonic monument unearthed from a forgotten digital epoch.
Hand-sculpted from high-grade, cellulose-reinforced mineral clay, the piece stands vertically, mounted on a monolithic base designed to simulate rough-hewn, heavily weathered volcanic stone. The sculptural form plays with deliberate material contrast: the smooth, preserved structural geometries of the glove's upper panels juxtapose sharply against deep pockmarks, micro-fissures, and simulated geological fault lines running down the controller forearm.
The color palette stays true to retro gaming nostalgia while embracing an ancient aesthetic. The body is coated in a desaturated, ancient ash-grey, while the classic D-pad, select buttons, and programmatic keys are picked out in faded turquoise and dusty magenta tones. The entire sculpture is sealed in a multi-layered polymer resin varnish to lock in the surface texturing, followed by an intricate, layered acrylic wash process to apply centuries of simulated environmental grime and oxidation.
On the rear base of the stone-textured sediment, the sculpture bears the hand-stamped signature mark of the artist's studio: Mr. Castle by Carlos Castillo. This heavy, evocative piece bridges the gap between pop culture sentimentality and the raw, unyielding weight of brutalist fine art, challenging collectors to look at the short-lived technology of our childhoods through a lens of deep time.
